When Samantha Martin first instructed here a few years ago, we were truly amazed at her ability to take a very large group of students through the rigors of an intensive workshop on voice. They loved her and here is why. While Samantha herself is a powerhouse singer who possesses a stunning voice, she knows how to bring voices together. She works with an eleven-piece band, two of whom are also exclusively singers. And though Samantha is the lead singer, she knows how to arrange voices and instruments that work effectively together, and that explains her recent Jun and Maple Blues nominations.
Samantha is also the consummate teacher and gregarious leader who knows how to stage a performance with both humor and grace. She is a fluent guitarist playing a variety of acoustic and resonator guitars, that allow her vocals to move through slow ballads or push up to hand-clapping gospel intensity. As a vocalist, her roots lie squarely within the wellspring of those powerful, strong woman’s voices embodied by such forbears as Marion Williams, Mavis Staples, Etta James, Bettye LaVette, and the great Bonnie Bramlett. In our Workshop setting, Samantha understands hos to teach the vehicles that allow students to find the power and control to lay down their vocals. She is also keenly aware of the obstacles that can keep them from doing that. We are so pleased to have Samantha back instructing voice in our 2020 Workshop.
